I wish you had said more about the knowledge aggregation problem (and how the price structure solves it), which I think is the heart of Hayek's contribution. You've put it in the right place, anyway, in your transition between your discussions of mediating institutions and the fatal conceit.

excellent essay, Brad. I really enjoyed this. And I think you understand Hayek quite well. People forget he grew up in the Austro-Hungarian Empire so in a way he was an orphan of Empire. He saw that monarchal conservatism as a political dead end. Though a British subject he remained an exile and did not identify with the Tory (Conservative) party.
